The Many Markings of Cowhide

Using cowhide rugs in your decor scheme might seem like a country western nightmare, but in reality this bovine floor decor is a versatile, stain resistant, hypo-allergenic alternative to messy carpets. Cowhide comes in a variety of colors, and every hide is unique. This makes it a perfect choice for the discerning consumer looking to decorate with a piece no one else has- it's guaranteed that no one else will have a cowhide like yours.

No matter what color scheme your decor follows, chances are high you can find a cowhide rug to match. At its core, a cowhide will add a masculine touch to any room. Matching the rug to other decor within the room, however, has the potential to transform a room into a rustic, shabby chic, or even a feminine room if done properly. A major factor in what tone your rug will take lies in the color you choose. Classic decorators can choose white or black, while those with more eclectic tastes may look for a holstein pattern or brown and white splotches.

Brands, scars, the cut of the rug, and numerous other factors contribute to the uniqueness of your rug and allow you almost unlimited options. You may even be able to find cowhide rugs that have been dyed specific colors, further unleashing your imagination.

If you have family members with environmental allergies, a cowhide rug is a smart choice.
Completely hypoallergenic, these rugs won't irritate your nose. They are resistant to mold, don't hold dander, and discourage pests from taking up residence. They're also extremely hard wearing, stain resistant, and can handle high traffic areas with ease. Unlike a traditional rug, cowhides won't unravel, are difficult to tear, and are easy to spot clean even the trickiest liquids off of. If you choose a black or brown rug, stains are not likely to show at all, or will be extremely minimal, even if not cleaned immediately after the stain occurs. For this reason, they're often considered the ideal rug for families with pets or small children.

These rug masters aren't limited to the floor, either. Try hanging one on your wall as a focal piece in a room, or draping one over the back of a piece of furniture to revamp your old couch or rocking chair. They can be used as a rug almost anywhere, from the dining room to the bedroom to a hallway. Since they are so long-lived, you can expect to pass your cowhide rug down from generation to generation, making a living memory for your children and grandchildren.

Overall, cowhide rugs are the ideal decorating solution for those looking for a durable, stain-resistant, hypoallergenic, classic decorating focal point. They bring a room together in a cost-effective way that is difficult to achieve with other types of flooring, and they look much more expensive than they actually are. They offer a unique aesthetic that most other rugs cannot achieve on their own. Your cowhide rug will serve you and your floors well for many years to come.

  6. I haven't thought about using cowhide as a rug. I normally just stick to our hardwood floors because it's a lot easier to maintain. I'm considering this as a design option though.

  7. I have mixed feelings about having a cowhide rug. It is beautiful, no doubt about that. But the thought that it is the skin of a dead animal makes me think twice.
