Simple tips to brighten your child's nursery

There are some great tips to brighten your child’s nursery. Not only does a bright nursery make a beautiful addition to your home, but it elevates everyone’s mood, including your little ones.

Layer Your Curtains
Although it is important to have dark curtains to keep the light out when your little one goes to sleep, having a sheer layer beneath keeps light in during the day without compromising your privacy. You can choose to colour coordinate with your furniture, for example, beige armchair, orange cushions, cream coloured sheer curtains, mocha brown curtains, and so on.

Choose Fun Bright and Light Colours
Consider painting your walls in light bright tones like light yellow to match bright orange cushions, cream or light green carpet and a dark wooden crib.

Good Storage System
Clutter can make a room feel smaller and darker. Investing in a good set of drawers, boxes or shelves is a great idea to keep your child’s room clutter-free and brighter. It also helps keep it clean. Be sure to have a place for everything. Remember, as the saying goes, less is more! Make a habit of occasionally purging clothes, shoes, socks, and other things the children have outgrown or toys they don’t use. If you want to keep them for potential kids to come in the near future, consider putting them out of sight in overhead closets, or in a different room or storage area.

Art
Artwork is a great way to add life and colour to your room. Whether you choose to go with a theme, for example, nature and animals, or simply choose to paint your favourite cartoon characters on the wall, be sure to keep it simple, to use bright colours.

Furniture
The furniture you choose can also make a huge difference in keeping your nursery bright. Bulky furniture in a small room can make it feel smaller and dark. Prioritize what you need to avoid unnecessary furniture. It is also a great idea to keep the furniture you do have streamlined, for example, you can buy a crib with an attachable changing table and compartment for storage of items like diapers, wet wipes, burp cloths, or other essentials. You can also consider buying a crib with an in-built clothes drawers for maximization of space and storage, or choose to buy sleeker furniture, like a simple rocking chair versus a large bulky one, and so on. Although it is possible to buy your furniture used or from different stores to get the best deals, keeping it color coordinated and clutter-free is quite important.

Light-Fixtures
Light-fixtures are a great way to keep a room bright. Consider investing in adjustable dimming lights which are helpful in putting your child to sleep. You can also use bright colorful shades to match your room and place them strategically in different places in the room.

These few simple tips can make your child’s nursery a bright and uplifting place for you and your children to be.

Pinay Mommies Community's 2nd Grand Eyeball

I used to have only a handful of friends in the blogging community until I joined the Pinay Mommies Community (PMC). For those who are not familiar with our group, the Pinay Mommies Community is a group of Pinay mommy bloggers not only from the Philippines but also from other parts of the world. Founded by Ruby Ricafrente of PinayMommyOnline.com in January 21, 2008, the group aims to help each member develop as bloggers while fostering camaraderie through delightful social interaction.

2011-11-22 PMC Grand EB Photoscaped (28)

Mommy blogger members of PMC hung out and bonded more in our Facebook Group. Proof of this is the first-ever PMC eyeball that was held last April and the 2nd Grand EB was held last November 22, 2011. A total of 48 blogging moms attended the meet-up, not to mention that some of them came with their supportive husbands and cute kids!

2011-11-22 PMC Grand EB Photoscaped (52)

The event would not be totally possible without the help of our precious sponsors:

Major Sponsors

Smart Steps of EVEolution, Inc. gave each mom samples of their baby-friendly and hypoallergenic line of detergent, fabric conditioner and bottle cleanser. We also got samples of Holy Seat disposable toilet seat covers and sanitizers. Moreover, they raffled off prizes much to the delight of the lucky mommy blogger winners!

major sponsors_smartsteps-tile

Unilab, Ceelin, and Dolan also gave us gift packs of their products. I'm so happy because I get to share the contents of the package to my boys, too. (See the big bottle of Ceelin? Happiness!) They also raffled off items to lucky PMC moms.

Minor Sponsors

Each mommy also got to take home gift packs from our generous minor sponsors, Ajinomoto Philippines, Scotch Brite, P&G Philippines, and Geiser Maclang.

Richwell Trading raffled off toys to 4 lucky PMC mommies and Goldquest Biotechnologies added cash to our EB funds. Meanwhile, Grendha sandals will be delivered to the homes of 4 lucky mommies. There were also generous moms in the group who raffled off items. I got to take home a walis tambo from Baguio! (Thank you, Mommy Ane Fallarme!)

Lastly, the event was made more memorable with photos taken by Krazy Pix photobooth. I really had a fun time doing wacky poses with Pehpot, Iris A. and Iris P.

I may have been tired from going around and taking photos for the group during the event (Mommy Eihdra and I were the designated official photographers) and going home from Pasay to Cainta with 3 big bags of loot and tokens (wee!), I was really happy having met the mommy bloggers that I only usually see online. I personally commend Ruby and Pehpot for their tremendous effort in organizing this event, to all the committee members, and to all the mommies who attended. I am so excited to see, chat, and giggle with you all again!

Thank you so much for all of these!!!

Don't you love YouTube?

I can spend so many hours watching YouTube especially on good days when my Internet connection isn't wonky. I usually watch music videos and add them to a playlist. I also subsribed to YouTube celebrities such as Mikey Bustos and make-up goddess, Michelle Phan.

And of course, I upload and watch our family videos. Here's Rap's speech during their school's Linggo ng Wika contest. He won 2nd prize, by the way!

YouTube has become my online archive of our family videos. It has become very convenient for us to watch our videos especially now that we can access YouTube on our Sony Internet TV. It has also helped me to easily share our videos to our relatives abroad. I just hope that our Sony Handycam can last a few more years so I can continue documenting our family milestones on YouTube. (I'm partial to sony camcorders and I know Sony products can last longer than other brands.)

Are you a YouTube fan? Like me, are you also fond of uploading family videos?

Get your Mom 24/7 Planner at the Mommy Mundo Bazaar 2011!

Moms are always busy bodies. In fact, moms are always on-call 24/7. One tool that helps me with my job as a mommy is my planner. Here, I keep my personal To-Do List and my editing and publishing schedule. I also keep track of my boys' schedules because, oftentimes, I would need to accompany one or both to an event/appointment. I even color-code my entries -- green for work-related tasks, red for the boys, black for my personal tasks, and orange for blog-related events.

For this same reason, Mommy Mundo introduces the Mom 24/7 Planner.

The Mom 24/7 Planner is the first-ever planner designed for moms like us! It's a 6"x8" hardbound, sprial-bound planner that includes special planning pages that can help us manage ours and our kids' schedules, as well. Two things I particularly like about this planner are the grocery list and menu planner pages. Aside from these, there are health record page for our kids, record pages for our househelpers, an expense tracker, goal planning pages, idea pages, and a menstrual tracker. Best of all, there are discount coupons from Mommy Mundo partners.

You can get your Mom 24/7 Planner at the Mommy Mundo Bazaar 2011 happening on November 19 to 20, 2011 at the Rockwell Tent in Makati City. Get it for only Php 300 (instead of Php 350) and you also get a Mommy Mundo Passport (worth Php 75) and free entrance to the Mommy Mundo Bazaar (worth Php 30). This only means you get more than 30% discount!

Mommy Mundo bazaar 2011

Smart. Glamorous. Hard Working. Breastfeeding.

More than beauty and brains, Daphne Oseña-Paez, Patricia Bermudez-Hizon, and Iza Abeja have something else in common. Breastfeeding. And these smart, glamorous, and hardworking breastfeeding advocates have decided to educate the public with billboards that will be seen all over Metro Manila.

Beauty, Brains & Breastfeeding Inc. (BBB) stressed that only 34% of Filipina mothers have exclusive breastfed their babies in the first 6 months of life. Moreover, based on UNICEF statistics, BBB also says that nearly 50% of all Filipina moms depend on artificial milk in varying degrees.

The group wants to correct misconceptions that prevent Pinay moms from breastfeeding their babies. BBB informs all moms that:

  • Exclusive breastfeeding in the formative first six months of an infant is NOT a hindrance to a mother’s professional or personal goals;
  • Exclusive breastfeeding is a commitment to give one’s child with life-nourishing food and a good start in life; to think of breastfeeding as only for the poor should be dismissed immediately;
  • Continued breastfeeding DOES NOT cause a woman’s breasts to deform, sag or make her look haggard and unattractive; and
  • The act of breastfeeding in public places is not an act shame and therefore should be encouraged.

Five of these billboards will be set up along MIA Road in Pasay City, PHILCOA Quezon City, and on the DILG Building in EDSA. A few more billboards will be up soon in other sites.

Feed your kid's need for speed at City Kart Racing Makati

It's a given that boys love cars. Though Rap's not into playing with toy cars nowadays, he still can't get enough of playing video games like Need for Speed. A few weeks ago, he got his taste of real driving when we were invited to participate in the first ever Bloggers' Blaze Fun Cup at City Kart Racing Makati (please read the full post about the event HERE).

Parents need not worry about letting their kids drive the go karts in the facility. The owners assured us that the vehicles are regularly checked and are properly maintained. First-time drivers are also taught about the basics in go karting such as the meaning of each flag.

Wearing of helmets is a must, too. They're not too strict about clothes, though. However, if your kids have long hair, you'll have to tie them in a bun first or at least keep the hair inside the helmet for safety purposes.

Kids 4 feet and above can drive at City Kart Racing Makati. See that kid who raced with Rap? He's just seven years old and he drives faster than me!

City Kart Racing Makati is at the 7th level of Park Square 1 in Ayala Center. For more inquiries, you can visit CityKartRacing.com, like City Kart Racing on Facebook, or follow @citykartracing on Twitter.

Natural Moms by ASCOF Lagundi

Do you advocate natural and organic products for your family? Then, like me, you are a natural mom!
ASCOF Lagundi, the all-natural cough medicine made from organically grown and harvested lagundi leaves, is one with us in this advocacy. Pascual Laboratories, maker of ASCOF, set up the Natural Moms community for moms who prefer natural and organic products for the family. The community's blog contain articles that share helpful tips and information related to green and organic living. Meanwhile, the community's Facebook and Twitter accounts are venues where moms can interact and exchange experiences and conversations in real time.

Join me and other fellow natural moms in the community by visiting the Natural Moms blog, liking the Natural Moms Facebook page, and following the Natural Moms Twitter account.

By the way, I and other natural mommy bloggers were invited to tour Leonie Agri Corp. (LAC) Farm, the first organic and largest organic farm in the country and the place where the lagundi leaves used for ASCOF are harvested and processed. You can read about the inspiring story behind the farm here.

Why mommies need a "Me Time"

Not once have I been asked "Mommy Mauie, why The 24-Hour Mommy? Don't you ever get tired?" All of those people who asked are not moms that's why they cannot relate. I tell them, "yes, I do get tired" because I do especially on school days.

But you know, I keep myself sane because I'm the mom, the wife, and the over-all in charge of running our tiny household of four humans and two dogs. When things get really toxic, I go out and have my "me time." Just today, I went to the nail salon and had my nails painted blue!

Dr. Nadine Kaslow, who's a psychiatry professor at the Emory University and chief psychologist for the Grady Health System, gives three reasons why moms should have a "me time" every now and then:

  1. To take care of others, you should first take care of yourself. You'll just be like a car that won't move because there's no fuel. Don't tire yourself too much and relax whenever you can.
  2. Taking care of yourself will make you feel better about taking care of others. This way, you won't feel resentful that you're giving every minute of your time for the family yet getting nothing in return.
  3. Happy moms are more effective moms. You'll be less stressed and irritable because you're happy enough to shrug it all off. This especially applies to moms of active toddlers!
"Me time" shouldn't be expensive because you'll eventually get stressed if you go way above your family budget! Sometimes, it relaxes me to just go around the mall all by myself and just go window shopping whether it be admiring michael kors watches displayed at a jewelry store or trying on clothes that I plan to buy once I get my writing cheque. It's like having a date with myself and I do feel refreshed and more energized right after.

Being a mom is indeed a 24/7 job. But, as you can see in my blog header, there are still many things that I do part-time. By the way, I think this applies not only to moms but to dads as well.

When was the last time you had a date with yourself? I'd be glad to read about it!

Working Abroad

I tell my son that I'd leave and work abroad once he graduates from elementary school to teach him how to become independent of me. Honestly, I was kind of half-joking. Part of me wants to go and try it out but a bigger part of me wants to stay and be a full-time mom and wife. It's just that sometimes, especially when I feel that our budget is not enough, I feel guilty of not being able to help my husband more in providing for our family. Do you sometimes feel this, too?

But after balancing the pros and cons of leaving my boys, I always come back to my senses and realize that life is still better here even when times are rough. I'm actually afraid of having regrets in the end of missing important milestones and family events. And you know, I am really thankful that I can still choose to stay. Maybe, I'll just get more online jobs or part-time Webmaster Jobs to add to my income. I know we can pull this through.

Seri Fantasy World tickets at 50% off only from eBay Philippines' Kuponan

It was almost a year ago when I and the boys first visited Seriland, the land of happy thoughts. The place was just newly opened and we only discovered the place after eating at Makansutra in Manila Ocean Park. Since we have already visited Manila Ocean Park once, we opted to try Seriland for a change. We paid Php 450 for us adults and Php 300 for Rap. There's a separate payment for the Kid's Play Paradise but Rap didn't want to play alone with the other kids so we skipped that.

Now, Seriland is now called Seri Fantasy World and it's offering entrance tickets at 50% off through eBay Philippines' group buying site, Kuponan.

For Php 225, Kuponan's Seri Fantasy World deal already includes entrance to the Kid's Paradise, the 3D Cinema Plus, and my personal favorite, the Mirror Maze. Purchased coupons are valid from November 15, 2011 to February 15, 2012 which means you can bond here with the whole family during the holiday season! What's even better is that you only pay Php 80 for each coupon upon purchase at the Kuponan site because you will be paying the remaining Php 145 directly to Seri Fantasy World during your visit. That makes it even more affordable and it also gives you more time to save up for the trip with the family.

There are also numerous affordable deals in the eBay Kuponan site. To view them, all you have to do is to visit www.kuponan.ph. Before purchasing, however, you will need to log in to your eBay.ph account or register for one since your Kuponan account will be linked to your eBay.ph account. All your future Kuponan purchases will be reflected in your account's Purchase History. To buy, you just need to click the Pay Now button which will redirect you to the payment page. Purchases can be paid via Paypal, through BDO deposit, or through Globe GCash. The coupons will then be sent a week after confirmation of payment because that will also be the time when Kuponan will prepare the complete coupon list for the merchant.

I know it's a bit different from the shopping process of other deal buying sites but I have been an eBay member since 2005 and I haven't had a bad experience with the site yet so I fully trust this new venture of theirs. I hope you won't let this opportunity pass because Seri Fantasy World is indeed a fun place for both kids and kids at heart.
