Scouting for good deals from groupon sites

I'm sure you've seen them on Facebook and all over the Internet. These groupon sites are taking the country by storm. I think I subscribed to almost all of them but I have only tried buying vouchers thrice. I'm happy with my purchases so far and I'm sure my boys are all the more happier.

The first voucher I bought was from Ensogo.com.ph. I took advantage of the YSA Skin Care Intense Diamond Peel with Facial deal that was offered way back in September last year. Each voucher was priced at Php 312 which was a real steal from the services actual value (Php 1,560). I bought 4 vouchers - one for me and the other three I gave to my husband, my mom, and my mom-in-law. It was a first time for all of us. Thankfully, the Robinsons Metro East branch where we went to was not crowded and their service was good. I was advised to have a diamond peel at least once a month.

A month after, I found myself buying vouchers from Cash Cash Pinoy. Their Terra Wellness Spa deal was worth it considering the location (Discovery Suites) and the services that were offered. For only Php 1700, I and my husband enjoyed a full body massage plus body scrub at the luxurious Terra Wellness Spa in Discovery Suites.

couple massage room

My latest voucher purchase was again from Cash Cash Pinoy. I bought 3 entrance tickets to Ace Water Spa for only Php 299 each. My boy was so happy with the purchase. In fact, he's excited to visit Ace Water Spa already. We haven't used the vouchers yet but we're planning to use them as soon as school is over.

I am in constant search for good deals from my suking groupon sites. I get notified through my email and through Facebook. Not only do I save a lot from buying from these groupon sites, I also get to use the money I keep in Paypal. This is why my husband is also happy because I don't get to spend money from our monthly budget, haha!

I hope I get a good deal soon. I'll be writing about them, don't you worry!

How to deal with stained bathroom tiles

Once, a mommy-friend asked us about her problem with her bathroom's stained tiles. She said that no matter how they clean the tiles, the stains still remain.

Image from: http://www.sxc.hu/photo/748315

Some bathroom stains are just so stubborn that we still need to use additional products aside from the commercially available bathroom cleaner that we already use. Here are some to choose from:

  • White vinegar mixed with equal part of water and brushed directly on the stain.
  • Paste made with baking powder and a little water brushed directly on the stain.
  • Hydrogen peroxide or chlorine bleach applied directly on the stain. However, these should never be used on colored tiles.

I strongly advise not to use muriatic acid as it can be fatal even when only inhaled. When all else fails and if budget permits, just have your tiles replaced. You can even opt to have glass mosaic tiles installed to give your bathroom a new look.

Do you have more tile cleaning tips to share? Please do share them by commenting to this post! :)

The Alalay Can Haz Facebook!

Everybody knows that I don't have a maid but a houseboy who has been with my husband's family even before we were married. He's very efficient; he does all the house chores plus extras such taking care of our two dogs, gardening, and washing our cars. He's our Mr. Fix-it, too. He told me that he's the son of a carpenter that's why I trusted him to build our son's loft.

I did save a lot from having him do all the carpentry work. But you know, my alalay can have bad days, too. He can be cranky at times. Sometimes, I even thought of him as hormonal already with his mood swings and all. I was ready to buy him some hormonal acne treatment pills (joke!) when I realized that all he needed was a diversion and a time to relax.

So I taught him how to use Facebook. Believe it or not, living with him has become a breeze after that. No more mood swings, I tell 'ya! He has been more diligent in doing housework without the usual crankiness because he knows that I will not give him computer time if he doesn't finish the housework before lunch time. He plays Texas Hold 'Em Poker and has been asking me the basics of Cityville.

Alalay crankiness solved all with the help of Facebook. Zuckerberg is a homemaker's best friend!

Maria Aragon on Ellen

I soooo love this kid! Can't get enough of her videos. Maria is not only having a duet with Lady Gaga this March in the superstar's Toronto concert; she also appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show!

I am a Lady Gaga fan and "Born This Way" is in my playlist but I have only appreciated the lyrics when Maria did a cover of it. Oh, you should also see her other videos in her YouTube channel. She's a very gifted kid playing her music all by ear!

Now, Rap wants to learn how to play the piano again after learning that he's just the same age as Maria's. I already taught him the basics when he was 5 or 6 years old. I'm just going to enroll him in piano lessons this summer because I don't have time to teach him how to play anymore.

Looking for a graduation dress?

Graduation month is fast approaching. My youngest brother is graduating in college and, since he's a guy, I won't need to worry about his attire. The only thing that we will need to have is the almost 7k in graduation fees that I need to produce by the end of this week. Oh well, at least the next thing that I need to save up on is his graduation dinner and I still have lots of time for that.

Girls have greater graduation woes. Not only do they have to pay the graduation fees but they also need to look pretty come graduation day. In my high school, we were only required to wear our school uniform underneath our white togas.

Graduating from UP Manila, I didn't get to wear a sablay as the UP Diliman graduates did. What we wore was a black toga and underneath it I wore my mom's pretty powder blue coat and skirt. Good thing we're both of the same size!

Me with my college barkada.
(L-R: Nurse Sharon, Atty. Mae, Teacher Jen, Atty. Claire, myself, and Atty. Abby.)

Times are tough and graduation fees are already expensive. A borrowed cocktail dress can be a pretty graduation dress. Old bridesmaid dresses can also be re-used. Graduating from college is indeed a once in a lifetime affair. Then again, I don't think that we should spend so much on graduation dresses.

Live with a happy heart

I was supposed to write this post last Valentine's day but I was so busy that I'm writing this a week after.

I once read that a healthy heart is a happy heart and vice versa. In my quest to be healthy, I have also found ways to see life in a more positive view. No amount of riches in the world can compare to a life that is lived with unconditional happiness and content.

Having a happy heart makes you beautiful inside and out. It's the best anti wrinkle cream ever. There will be no sleepless nights because your conscience is clear and you have nothing to hide from the world. There'll be no room for a frown because your happy heart will throw all your troubles away. There be no fear of the unknown because your happy heart knows that the Lord will always be watching and guiding you every step of the way.

Life is short and we should be living it to the fullest no matter how many the hurdles are along the way. Actually, this is my mantra and the reason behind my personal/diabetes blog, Living A Sugar Free Sweet Life. Live each day with a happy heart and spread happy vibes to everyone!

Trumpets Playshop 2011 Summer Worskshop

In the summer of 2006, Rap attended the Children's Musical Theater workshop of Trumpets Playshop in Shangri-la Plaza mall. His class presented a play entitled "The Best Toys" and he was dressed up as a robot. The experience awakened his love for singing and performing that we continued to enroll him in voice lessons in the summer vacations that followed.

Kulturang Pinoy Quiz Wiz Semifinals

Yesterday, my boy competed with other grade schoolers at the 1st Kulturang Pinoy Quiz Wiz semifinals at the Department of Education in Pasig City. He passed the elimination round last November and he's one of the two fourth graders who are competing with other students in Grades 5 to 7 from other schools in Metro Manila.

Of course, we are so proud of Rap! We will still be proud of him even if he doesn't enter the finals. Being in the semifinals is already a big deal. Even his school is proud of him because only two pupils from his school got in. He has also been busy with extra-curricular activities that we weren't able to review much for this round.

I'm so fortunate to have one smart boy. We are convincing him to take up a course on medicine in college because he's so good in memorizing terms. Who knows, he can eventually discover medicine for rare diseases such as Mesothelioma? But this early, he tells me that he wants to be a lawyer. I'm still hoping that he'd change his mind.

Cold Lonely Night

It's the first time in a couple of years that I'm sleeping without my husband. He left this morning for an overseas business trip and I can't help but feeling lonely. It just feels unusually sad in here without him. I'm a little bit lucky though that my boy still wants to sleep in our room or I might be sleeping alone tonight.

Gah! He'll be gone for a week! I might probably stay up until the wee hours of the morning so I'll just busy myself researching about apidextra reviews until I get sleepy. Never mind the pasalubong. I really can't stand myself being without him for so long. I just need a loving hug from my hubby right now.

Sneeze n Sniffles Won't Stop Germs

I received an interesting package in the mail this morning. See what it is below:

Yup, it's a gift pack from Safeguard. But can you see the three tissue boxes I place on top of the bars of soap? These tissue boxes are called Sneeze n Sniffles and they are part of Safeguard's campaign in spreading the importance of preventing disease-causing germs.

Sneeze n Sniffles, a fictitious brand, looks like an ordinary tissue box from the outside. However, each tissue pull reveals different faces of children with the headline: This won't stop germs from reaching him/her.

It is a sad fact that, even with the continuous campaign of both the government's health department and of Safeguard's to inform the public about the importance of preventing the spread of germs through proper hand washing, a lot still believe that just covering their mouths and noses with tissue paper is enough to shield them from diseases. Children are more susceptible to diseases such as colds, cough, and flu because their immune systems are not as strong as adults'. Our bodies may be able to fight these disease-causing germs but our children most probably can't.

So please wash your hands thoroughly as often as you need to and most preferably with a soap that has been proven to fight germs and bacteria. Wash your hands most especially before kissing and hugging your kids when you get home from the office or after you do your daily errands. Avoid spreading the germs with proper handwashing.

The Sneeze n Sniffles tissue boxes are being distributed for free in select places since December and will go on until February this year.

Vitamins For Older Kids

When Rap was younger, we regularly brought him to his pediatrician for check-ups. His doctor would usually inform us of the next scheduled visit especially when he's in line for a vaccine or a booster shot. As he grew older, the visits became occasional and we would only see his doctor when he's sick. There's only one thing that I did not change though, that is, giving him his daily dose of multivitamins.

Mark's vitamin
Photo: “Mark's vitamin” by http://twitter.com/adora, c/o Flickr. Some Rights Reserved

It's normal for parents of older children to think that they won't need to buy vitamins for their kids anymore. In fact, the American Academy of Pediatrics only suggest having a daily diet that follows the nutritional food pyramid. Then again, for picky eaters such as my boy, multivitamins are recommended since they don't get to fully get their daily nutritional needs from their limited food choices.

What do the experts recommend? Aside from multivitamins, pediatricians and nutritionists recommend older kids to have at least iron and calcium supplements to prevent anemia and to support their growing bones. Fortunately, my boy drinks milk daily and iron is already included in his multivitamin syrup so I don't buy additional supplement tabs of these. What I do add are Fern-C (Sodium Ascorbate) and Cherifer Forte to make him grow taller.

Are your kids taking multivitamin supplements? Would you still give them multivitamins even when they're older?

The Go Go Kabongo! Online Reading Program

It's just a few weeks before the school year ends in my son's school and I'm now busy scouting for activities that he can do during the summer. He has already chosen to study piano and Kumon. I am now looking for an online learning program that he can do at home while I also busy myself with my online tasks. It has been convenient for me to write when he's in school because there are no distractions to my train of thought. I don't want him to just spend idle time on the computer.

In my search for online learning games for kids, I came across the Go Go Kabongo! site. This online learning program specifically caters to the reading needs of children 4 to 7 years old. Learning reading has been integrated into various games that are programmed in different habitats (game environments). Each habitat has different entertaining games that aim in improving a young child's key skills in reading.

Take for example this first habitat, Laughter Lake, which subscribers can get for free just by signing up. By the way, signing up is now made easy with Facebook Connect. :)

Game 1 is called Critter Sizer where kids' attention and focus and vocabulary skills are developed by relating the number of syllables in an animal's name to its actual size.

Game 2, called Scuba Dude develops successive processing, working memory, and visual scanning while kids collect underwater treasures according to a sequenced specified in the game.

Lastly Game 3, which is called Going Buggy, aims to develop comprehension, visualization, and simultaneous processing skills by letting the child recreate the scene after listening to its story.

Cool, huh! This program is definitely a perfect supplement in my reading tutorial classes. The remaining habitats are priced at only $4.95 each which is so cheap with our current peso-dollar exchange rate. Check out www.kabongo.com for more details on the game if you're interested.

For Makoy

Bloghopping at midnight got me stumbling upon a Christmas post of a dear high school friend. I didn't know he'll blog about us bumping into each other at the supermarket hours before Noche Buena last year. We didn't get to talk much to each other that day. I figured he was as busy as I was that day so we just exchanged small talk. I wish we had longer time to talk and catch up. He's one of the best people I've known since high school.

Makoy, thank you for the kind words. I was really serious when I told you that I loved your new aura. I was so happy to see you looking more happier with life. Yes, I knew you were with someone special that day. Why would you even be buying food if you're celebrating Christmas Eve alone? I forgive you for not introducing her to me but you have to introduce us to each other soon. Don't worry, I won't ask when you'll be settling down, hehehe. It is also my wish that we'd reconnect just like the old times. I miss you, my friend. You know I'm just a text/email away.

I was just so inspired to write after reading his post. It made me feel special. In all these years, I kept my distance to give him his much needed space. I knew he wanted space the moment I discovered that he's no longer linked to any of my social networks. But I picked up bits and pieces of his soul through his writings as what I did tonight. I hope I won't be this distant anymore and that we'll reconnect with each other soon.

Fitting Girls Buckle-up Shoes

I remember I always had buckle-up shoes as a young girl. These are the kind of girls shoes with straps. I think I've had all styles of these buckle-up shoes - from the one with the leather strap in the middle to the one with two straps, and to the simpler one with just one strap. I even wore Kung Fu shoes! Ever got one of those?

Who knew that there's a lot of things to remember in fitting girls buckle-up shoes? Since I don't have my own baby girl yet, I'm showing this video to my sister and to the moms out there who have cute little girls. Please see the video below:

See what I'm talking about?

As moms, we should remember that comfort comes first especially in buying shoes for our kids. Shoes that are too small are not only uncomfortable but they can also cause corns and calluses to your kid's feet just as what adult feet would get from wearing shoes that are not fitted well. If the shoes are too big, the shoes might just slip off their feet while moving around doing their daily routine at home and in school. This would also encourage your child to slide his/her feet while walking just to keep the feet from slipping off the shoes. This is not only bad for the posture but it would also wear the soles of the shoes faster.

Hope you find this post useful!

We Won!

Remember the Parent-Son Duet I wrote about the last week? Well it was the finals this afternoon and we won! Here are the videos of the two songs we presented in the contest...

Now I'm sure of two things because we did well in this contest. One, my boy won't have to change schools. Two, I won't be shipped by my husband to the Bahamas, hahaha!

Hope you enjoyed it!

Valentine Blues

So how was your V-Day? Were you part of the lovestruck lot who anticipated a romantic dinner by candlelight? I had the Valentine blues yesterday so I didn't even think of preparing something special for my boys. By the way, before you react, my boys have nothing to do with the sadness I felt yesterday.

Why did I ever feel like dying on Valentine's Day? Here's why:

  • Valentine's Day on a Monday is never fun. My writers submit their articles every Monday so I'll have the rest of the week editing and sending it back to them for publishing. As such, I was confined to my desk from 9 a.m. till 6 in the evening.
  • Grooveshark was down for two hours! I can never work in a quiet office so I always play music loudly. Instead of downloading pirated mp3s and uploading them in my laptop, I just listen to the streamed music in Grooveshark. I prefer listening to Grooveshark than the radio because I have already an arranged playlist for my working hours.
  • I received a personal phone call that made me feel bad the whole day. Nope, sorry, I'm not writing about it here.
I felt better later that night with my boys already home. Their hugs and kisses were all I needed. We just bought pizza and fried chicken and ate it at home.

I didn't get anything from my husband and I didn't prepare anything for him, too. If I had the means to do so, I could've gotten one the gateway computers we saw at SM Cyberzone last year. Nevertheless, Valentine's Day is just one of the 365 days in a year. At least, we tell each other "I love you" everyday.

I didn't quite expect my Valentine's Day to be like that. Although we really don't usually celebrate as some lovers do, I was still expecting it to be a happy lovely day. Gone are the Valentine blues and I'm feeling better now.

Mommy Moments: Dear Baby

mommy moments

The first photo you see above is actually a screencap of the first website I made for my boy back in 2000. Yep, it was hard-core html, baby! Sadly, Geocities shut down and I was left with screencapped memories of our family's first online photo gallery. I intend to document everything so that my boy can get to discover how he was when he was younger.

I was a hands-on mom when my boy was born. I only had a househelp when he was around 6 months old and we had to move to Laguna from Makati. Well, I am hands-on until now but my boy is big enough to handle almost everything by himself. Although caring for him has been more convenient than before, I still miss the times when I did everything for him. My dear baby is now a tween and I feel that time just passed too quickly.

Dearest Rap,

I am one lucky mom because I had you. Please don't grow up too fast. Mommies also need their babies, you know. Promise me I'll always be your best friend. I love you to the moon and back.

Love,
Mami

Jesus, Take The Wheel

By the time you read this, I may be on the stage with my boy singing our duet and I'm so nervous. The school is having a "Parent and Son Duet" and we signed up for that. My boy was actually looking forward to singing a solo this year but there'll be none this year. So dear me had to join in.

Friends and family have been giving me supportive messages on Facebook. They've known me to be a soloist in our church's choir in the past. But I haven't sung in front of an audience in years! I just hope I won't be a nervous wreck.

We're singing "Jesus, Take The Wheel" by Carrie Underwood. I think I'll be singing it from the heart. I'm asking Jesus to help me go through this, hehehe. My boy pa naman wants us to get to the final round next week. Or else daw. Or else what?! Hay, pressure!

This entry is written and posted with an HTC Desire HD. Oh, yeah!

No such thing as violent play?

I have just read an article about the benefits of aggressive play for boys. Being a mom to a boy myself, it fascinated me that some educators in the US do encourage rough play among their male pupils. I've observed it before in my classroom, boys do have an inclination towards rough play. The girls are often found in the playhouse while the boys would go around chasing each other. Sometimes, they would roll on the grass and I just let them be. It's free play, anyway. It's one of the venues where I get to learn more about each kid's personality.

My older male students were more aggressive, though. I taught Kinder 1 and Grade 1 classes, by the way. One of my first-graders was the youngest in a brood of four boys. Unknown to the parents, the oldest teen brother watched wrestling on TV with his younger siblings. Once, this student of mine did a wrestling move that almost fractured the arm of his classmate. I almost fainted.

"There's no such thing as violent play," says psychologist Michael Thompson who co-wrote "Raising Cain: Protecting the Emotional Life of Boys." He explains that play, even when it's rough, is not intended to hurt other people and that it's but characteristic of ever boy in every society. Violence and aggression, on the other hand, are what hurts people. So as long as boys do not intend to hurt their playmates, it's still considered healthy because it's in their nature to be rough and active.

What does that leave us, then? In my opinion, it still boils down to having parents or guardians on site. Parents should supervise play in a way that their kids will not hurt other children or damage theirs of other people's properties. When my boy was younger, I'd let him and his friends play in the living room or in the yard but never in his room. Aside from me not wanting to damage our laminate flooring, I also want them to be in a place where I can keep a close watch. It should also be the same in school. Teachers and other members of the school staff should let the boys play their rough games but also remind them that hurting is not allowed. They can impose penalties to whoever hurts a classmate or damages school property.

What's your take on this? Can boys really benefit from aggressive play? I'd love to read about what you think.

One Crazy Weekend

Five days a week, I sit in front of my desk either editing or writing articles which are scheduled for posting. For both my online writing projects and my blogs, I have a publishing calendar which I try to follow religiously lest I want to be buried in backlogs. The boys also have a daily routine that we do not get to really spend quality time with each other in the evening. Weekends, however, are a different thing. As long as we don't have a planned activity to do or an event to attend, we forget about the time.

This past weekend, for instance, the three of us watched TV until the wee hours of Saturday morning. Then, we woke up around 10 in the morning and had breakfast. It was tambay mode again with me setting up a blog for my sister, my husband doing his other online tasks, and my boy watching cartoons online. We lost track of time that we had our lunch around 6 in the evening. The three of us were all on the couch again in front of the TV until I decided to reheat left-over pizza slices and boil eggs which became our dinner and past-midnight snack. We woke up late again the next day sleepy but, definitely, happy and ready to tackle the Monday ahead. It was one crazy weekend, I tell 'ya! But weekends are supposed to be like that, right? It's best spent lazily and relaxed with the family.

This coming weekend, we'll be driving early morning to Clark for the Philippine Hot Air Balloon Fiesta. The weekend after that, my husband will be on business travel to India. Our next crazy weekend might be the weekend that will follow that. For now, I'll get busy with pending work. Speaking of work... I have to start searching for ab workouts for 6 pack for a fitness write-up I'm doing.

How was your weekend? Was it as crazy as ours? I hope you enjoyed it, too!

Mommy Moments: Love Song

mommy moments

I still cry when I hear this song. It makes me want to bring back the years when my boy was still smaller. The first time I heard "I Hope You Dance" was after I gave birth to my boy. It sounded so apt and the message is so sincere. Everything I pray for my child is already written in the lyrics. Our children grow up so fast that, as mothers, all we can ever do is pray that they grow up to be what God has designed them to be and to never forget to love and to hope and to just dance all their worries away.

"I Hope You Dance"

I hope you never lose your sense of wonder
You get your fill to eat
But always keep that hunger
May you never take one single breath for granted
God forbid love ever leave you empty handed
I hope you still feel small
When you stand by the ocean
Whenever one door closes, I hope one more opens
Promise me you'll give faith a fighting chance

And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance
I hope you dance
I hope you dance

I hope you never fear those mountains in the distance
Never settle for the path of least resistance
Living might mean taking chances
But they're worth taking
Lovin' might be a mistake
But it's worth making
Don't let some hell bent heart
Leave you bitter
When you come close to selling out
Reconsider
Give the heavens above
More than just a passing glance

And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance
I hope you dance
(Time is a real and constant motion always)
I hope you dance
(Rolling us along)
I hope you dance
(Tell me who)
I hope you dance
(Wants to look back on their youth and wonder)
(Where those years have gone)

I hope you still feel small
When you stand by the ocean
Whenever one door closes, I hope one more opens
Promise me you'll give faith a fighting chance

And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance
Dance
I hope you dance
I hope you dance
(Time is a real and constant motion always)
I hope you dance
(Rolling us along)
I hope you dance
(Tell me who)
(Wants to look back on their youth and wonder)
I hope you dance
(Where those years have gone)

(Tell me who)
I hope you dance
(Wants to look back on their youth and wonder)
(Where those years have gone)

By the way, I think that there's also a remake of this song sung by Ronan Keating but I like the original better. Happy Love Month, mommies! Glad to be back in Mommy Moments again.
