2010, The Year That Was

The year 2010 has been good to me to say the least. I can say that I went through a couple of hardships this year but everything taught me one or two lessons along the way. Although this year has not been as bountiful as the past few years we have had, there wasn't one instance that the Lord failed to provide what we needed. For that, I am truly grateful.

In 2010, I was able to finally learn how to bake after buying my very first oven with my blogging income. I was also able to travel to Bohol and Bacolod City with my family. During the summer, we used part of our savings to renovate our home and we were able to make it a little bit bigger than it was. It was also during the same time that I got introduced to cultivating wheat grass and drinking its freshly squeezed juice.

This 2010, was also a year of milestones for this blog. This year was the first year that I started launching contests and give-aways. By doing so, I gained new blog followers and new online friends, too! As of this writing, The 24 Hour Mommy has 594 Facebook fans, woot! Thanks to everyone for supporting this blog.

This year, I also started to write advocacy posts such as the breastfeeding series for UNICEF and web safety posts for Web Safety Philippines. Career-wise, I saw myself going up a step higher as I assumed the post of Contributing Editor for WikiHealth.

2010 was full of ups and downs. But you know me, I'm never the half-glass empty kind of gal. I always try to look at the positive side of things. The other night, I watched Bro. Bo Sanchez talk on TV about positivity and how everything, however bad it may seem, is a blessing. So I'm looking forward to 2011 with eagerness to embrace all the positive vibes from the universe! Who knows, this new positive vibe may finally get me the apple bottom skinny jeans I so wanna fit into, LOL!

But kidding aside,I want to take this opportunity to thank you my dear readers. You are all blessings to me. May the good Lord also shower you with all the blessing that you have showered upon me. Happy New Year and may you have all the things that you are wishing for this coming year!

Be Careful, Santa!

Because this year, my boy's gonna be extra watchful. He did not even prepare a letter for you because he believes that he can tell you his wish through prayers since you were a bishop. Actually, I would like to warn your helpful elves, too. My boy expects them to be the ones to deliver your gift because you'll be super busy come Christmas Eve, for sure. He told me he'll be checking every nook and cranny just to catch you guys. So be careful, Santa. My boy just might finally meet you in the flesh this Christmas Eve!

Obviously, my boy is excited to receive his gift from Santa. Yes, he did not write a letter but he told me what he wanted from Santa this Christmas. He thought that, with two of us praying to Saint Nicholas, his wish will be granted. I expect my boy to be waiting for Santa and his elves tomorrow night. I'm sure he'll have a grand time spying on Santa even without a nikon spotting scope to help him catch the poor old, white-bearded man in red.

Are your kids anxious to catch Santa, too?

I am now officially addicted to Zynga's Cityville! Cityville is the newest Facebook game launched by Zynga. Apparently, it's the gaming company's most successful launch to date and I believe it is. I failed to resist resist the temptation of having another work distraction and I have to blame my son for this, LOL! I built my city last week and now I'm at Level 19. *inserts sheepish grin here*

With this, I had to leave my Frontierville homestead behind. I had to choose just one game as my stress buster or else I won't get a single job done within a day. I hope my neighbors won't forget to harvest my pear trees over there.

Hey, would you like to add me as neighbor? Just lemme know! ;-)

Holiday rush

This past week, almost everything has been a blur to me. I've been busy writing and editing entries for my writing job that I haven't even been able to complete my Christmas list. Heck, I even forgot to buy my son new clothes for his Christmas party! I'm just glad he understood.

So yeah, I'm sorry if I can't write something with substance tonight as I my eyes are already drooping. I lack sleep because (thank goodness) I squeezed a Christmas get-together with my husband's former officemates last night. Tomorrow, Rap and I are going to plug in the Wii and do some boxing. I feel so bloated. Sitting 8 hours a day in front of the computer plus all these holiday buffets are not good. I might even need a safe fat burner.

Hope you had a fun and not so stressful week. I also hope you're done with your holiday shopping because Christmas Day is just one week away. Good night!

Three Days Till Christmas Break

Working-at-home means no Christmas break. However, I also get to kinda enjoy my boy's Christmas break because that would mean me not waking up at 5 in the morning to prepare his bath and breakfast. It also means that I can save money from not giving him his allowance, haha! Do I look like the one who's more excited of Christmas break?

Yeah, I think so. But my boy's excited too. He can't wait to keep his textbooks inside his bag and forget about studying his lessons for two weeks. He's also getting enthusiastic about working on his comic book drawings this coming Christmas break. Maybe I will just ask him to study for his Kulturang Pinoy Quiz Wiz for an hour every day.

How are you spending the Christmas break this year? Are you as excited as I am?

Preparing for Retirement

Last Friday, I received a text message from my mother that she was in the E.R. again with my dad who has once again suffered from a mild heart attack. Although I have prepared myself for text messages and phone calls like this, I still got scared of two things: my father's life and my savings. Unlike my mom, my dad doesn't have a monthly pension because he resigned from his work long before his retirement. Every time he gets confined in the hospital, my siblings and I shell out money to finance his bills.
Image from stock.xchng.

I am lucky that I have siblings whom I can count on in helping me take care of our parents' needs. I worry about the future when it's me who's going to need medical help. Being a freelancer, I won't enjoy retirement benefits that my husband will get come his retirement age. I don't want to burden my boy with raising money for my medical expenses especially since he wants to become a missionary priest. I don't to fully rely on my husband's pension, too.

So I told my husband the other day that I'm planning to raise money to buy myself a retirement plan. It's never to early to save up for the retirement years, don't you think? I checked out quotes in insurancespecialists.com and found some good deals. I just hope that insurance providers here in the Philippines have the same affordable yet comprehensive pension plan packages.

How about you? How are you preparing for your retirement years?

Top of the Class

We are so proud of our boy. He's doing so well in school - both in academics and in extra-curricular activities. He has also represented his school in inter-school events. On February 2011, he'll be competing with other kids from grades 4 to 7 in the 1st Kulturang Pinoy Quiz Whiz at the Department of Education headquarters. He's one of the two 4th graders (the other one's from a different school) who got in the elimination round. I'm not writing this to brag about his achievements. I would just like to share what we did to nurture his intelligence and to place him on top of his class.

Rap's 2nd grade achievements.

Months before Rap was born, I gladly quit my job to be a full-time mom. I have been raised by a full-time working mom. I and my siblings were basically left to study by ourselves. I hope you don't get me wrong. I salute all the working moms out there who can perfectly juggle both career and mommy responsibilities. I have just been fortunate to have the option to stay at home and care for my child.

Staying at home gave me lots of time to be with my boy. I read to him even when he was barely a year old and made him watch educational videos. He spoke his first word way before he even learned how to walk on his own. He did not even baby talk, he was just bulol with his R's and L's until he was in Kindergarten.

JAN 9: Bookworm
He's now into Mitch Albom after finishing the Harry Potter series.

Rap starting reading at 2 and 1/2 years. Since I wasn't working, I thought of homeschooling him. I chanced upon www.letteroftheweek.com and I designed a program for him using the lessons in this site as guide. I manually wrote and drew worksheets for him because we didn't have a printer yet. Simultaneous to that, I also taught him Math concepts, Filipino, and Writing. After finishing the 32-week curriculum (26 letters + 5 long vowel sounds), we went on to memorizing flags and capitals of the different countries of the world. We went to trips in the village's playground and clubhouse for our P.E. days. We also had field trips with Daddy.

As some of you may now know, it's this first-hand teaching experience with my son that inspired me to pursue my graduate studies in Education. I became a pre-school teacher the same year Rap turned 4 and went to study in the big school. Even so, I still continued to aid him in his studies by making test reviewers for him and helping him out with his school homeworks and projects.

Aside from training him well in academics, we also invested in developing his talents in sports and the arts. At age six, he was part of his school's varsity football team. Then, as he grew older, his interest moved on to swimming and Taekwondo. We also enrolled him in voice and theater lessons. He's now using the vocal skills he acquired as part of his school's grade school choir.

Moreover, we nurture his physical and mental development by providing him with healthy food and vitamin supplements. Rap is still a picky eater so I still have him drink milk and take his vitamins daily to supply the nutrients that he may not be getting from his favorite foods. We also have him enjoy sufficient rest everyday.

In the past decade of being a mommy and a teacher, I have come to a conclusion that all kids are smart. However, not every kid reaches his full potential to be top of the class unless we parents supply them with what they need to succeed. To expand, exceed, and excel in life, a kid should not only be studying in a good school but should also have parents who support him every step of the way.

Health insurance for the kasambahay

My houseboy does not have an SSS number yet. He has problems with his birth certificate that's why he's also having trouble securing his social security number. For the meantime, we decided to get him a health insurance as part of his benefits. Fortunately, my mother-in-law signed up as an agent of Caritas Health Shield and we were informed of this affordable deal.

Please click the image for a larger view.

It's just around Php 1,500 pesos a month on our part but I think it's better that we get a health card for him now than spend money should he become sick. Also, it would appear that we're helping him save money for the future because he will get 50,000 pesos on the 11th year.

I really like this combi plan. A cousin of mine even wishes that they have a plan like this in the US. She has been comparing plans through the WholesaleInsurance.net life insurance site and she thinks that Caritas Health Shield's combined health and term life insurance plan is better.

If you are interested to know more about this plan, I can share to you my mom-in-law's contact details. Just comment here with your email address. :)

Magnolia Ice Cream's Christmas Limited Edition Flavors

I'm a child of the 80s and Magnolia Ice Cream has been a huge part of my childhood. How can I ever forget the orange-flavored Twin Popsies I bought from Mang Mike, the Magnolia Ice Cream vendor in our school? Ah, those were the days when I can still enjoy all the sweets I want.

2010-12-03 Magnolia Ice Cream (19)

Just recently, Magnolia Ice Cream has launched its 2010 Christmas Limited Edition flavors. These three flavors will only be available from November 15, 2010 until February 2011 in supermarkets, Monterey outlets nationwide, and selected Petron Treats and shops.

Vanilla Praline contains cashew praline with streaks of caramel ripple in a vanilla ice cream base. This is my husband's favorite because it isn't too sweet and the vanilla ice cream base is so milky.

On the other hand, my boy loves the Caramel Cheesecake. He doesn't eat cheesecakes but he devoured the cheesecake bits that were in this caramel-streaked, caramel-flavored ice cream. Yep,if you're a die-hard caramel fan like my boy, this flavor's for you!

And since I cannot eat too much ice cream unless I want blood sugar levels to rise, I just get to admire the pretty colors and the apple-cinnamon aroma of the Apple Strudel flavor. I'm going to buy tubs of this flavor for our family reunion on the 30th because the green and red apple ripple makes it so "Christmassy." I'm sure our relatives, both young and old, will love the apple cinnamon bits and crushed chocolate pretzels in this flavor.

Enjoy while they're here! It's not only the flavors that you will love but also the reusable and microwaveable pretty plastic tubs that will sure be a hit among us moms. I already have so many plans in mind as to what I will do with the tubs, hehe!

2010-12-03 Magnolia Ice Cream (7)

The design of the tub, which depicts P-Noy's "Tuwid na Daan," was the winning design in a contest sponsored by Magnolia Ice Cream. Don't you like how colorful it is?

Incidentally, NomnomClub.com is holding a blog writing contest for this limited edition holiday treats. Check out the link to find out how you can win up to Php 2,000 worth of Magnolia Ice Cream GCs.

Going Android

My husband is moving over to a new company in a few days. Part of the move is leaving his company-assigned Blackberry unit behind and buying his own. Based on some of my blogger friends' reviews, having an Android phone is the way to go especially if the phone user has high mobile computing needs. My husband, on the other hand, is planning to get the HTC Desire HD.

There are lots of rave reviews about this htc desire hd android phone. I am impressed with its specifications. With a CPU processing speed of 1GHz, 768 MB RAM, and 1.5 GB internal storage, it would be almost the same as having a laptop around 24/7. The phone also boasts of an 8MP camera, internal GPS antenna, widgets, and HTCSense. Best of all, it runs on Windows 7!

The last time we asked, price was around Php 35K. We're going back tomorrow and we'll see if we can haggle a bit more for a lower price. I am so jealous of my husband's new phone! Gah, it will take me months before I can buy one for myself. Maybe I should just wait for the time when he hands it over to me, hehehe!

Facial Care For Tweens

When I hit puberty at the age of 11, I didn't have oily skin and acne breakouts. My boy will soon be 11 years old in five months and I'm now seeing sebum forming in the pores of his nose. I think he'll be hitting puberty soon.

One of my pet peeves is seeing blackheads on noses. I don't want my boy to have these. So to help him with his budding facial problems, I am now starting to train him in caring for his skin. Here's what I am doing:

  • I remind him of the importance of good hygiene. Honestly, I had to monitor his bathing until he turned 10 this year. I wanted to make sure that he cleanses his body well and that he rinses all the soap off. Then this year, I taught him how to wash his face properly. My husband tells me that I'm raising a vain child but I think I'm not. Don't you agree?
  • I don't let him use bar soap on his face. He uses Lactacyd right now and it helped reduce the oily pores of his skin without drying it. I figured that the product is safe for baby's skin so it would work well on my tween's face.
  • I ask remind him to increase his water intake. This is one of my problems with my boy. He oftentimes forget to drink water even when I make him bring a water bottle to school. Water keeps the skin hydrated and fresh all day.
  • I give him vitamin supplements to keep his immune system up. When the immune system is strong, the body becomes successful in fighting out toxins and keeping them away.

Do you have other facial care tips to share? I'd love to read about it.

It's Time For Family Game Nights!

Keep the gadgets in the closet, shut down your computers, and bring out the boardgames. It's the weekend and it's time for a Family Game Night!

2010-11-27 Hasbro Family Game Night (5)

I myself am guilty of supplying our boy with all gadgets he can play with. He has netbook PSP, and Wii. Being an only child, he has no one to play with but us his parents. Oftentimes, we become so busy with work that we are not able to play with him. There have been times when he begged us to play Monopoly with him but we were just so tired and busy to do so.

2010-11-27 Hasbro Family Game Night (7)

Jingo Zara, a child psychologist, spoke to us mombloggers during the Hasbro Family Game Night event held last November 27, 2010 and hosted by Daniel and Roanne Dionisio of Color Mix Corporation, the exclusive distributor of Hasbro Games in the Philippnes. Among the many lessons that Family Game Nights teach are the following:

  • Dealing with loss. It's our chance to teach our kids how to gracefully accept defeat and move on. Moreover, it teaches kids how to respect each other's feelings and to support a brother/sister in times of defeat.
  • Parents are not only guardians. We can show our kids that we can also be their closest friends by spending time with them and having a worthwhile conversation while playing the game.
  • Having fun doesn't need to be expensive and spent outside the home. Family Game Nights offer families with an inexpensive way to have fun just by staying at home and playing with the family. Come to think of it, you can save lots of money by not eating out. Just serve a hearty meal before the game and serve some chips and drinks for everyone's snacking pleasure while playing. Plus, the safety of everyone is ensured.
  • It's the best time to teach love and respect. It can be the best time for couples to show their affection in front of the kids. (Dads can let moms win. *wink wink*) Older kids can also learn how to be more patient with the younger siblings.
Hasbro Games encourages families to bond by starting their own Family Game Night. Board games are a sure way to have fun with the family right in the comforts of the home. Here's how you can stage your own Family Game Night:

I had a fun game of Taboo with other parent bloggers during the event.
Thanks to Jennie of Marriage and Beyond for this photo.
  1. Schedule it! Choose a night that is most convenient for the whole family. You can opt to have it once or twice a month or even weekly.
  2. Make it a tradition. Have the whole family look forward to each Family Game Night by serving special meals before the game and while playing the game.
  3. Keep a family scoreboard. You can honor family members who won the game by posting their names on a special spot in the home. It will also serve as a challenge for the others to do better the next time around.
  4. Invite special guests. Have titos and titas, cousins, and grandparents come over for a round of games. You can also have the games during special family gatherings.
Habro Games has a wide assortment of choices for kids as young as 3 years and even for adults. Our son's personal favorite is Monopoly. (We have the Philippine Edition at home.) It was through Monopoly that he easily learned how to count money and to plan strategies like a true real estate businessman, haha!

He's also been recently introduced to Boggle which I find to be a perfect tool in honing his English vocabulary and spelling skills. I can't wait for our next Family Game Night. With Christmas vacation just around the corner, I'm sure we'll have more fun and action-filled game nights ahead!

My Noel Bazaar 2010 Finds

Last weekend, we braved the crowds and went to shop at this year's Noel Bazaar at the World Trade Center. We arrived around five in the afternoon which made it easier to find a parking space within the WTC perimeter. While the traffic outside was manageable, the crowd inside the bazaar was not. It was almost impossible to linger and choose in some shops because people from the aisles kept on pushing us forward. I managed to buy only these:

Black n blue

I was also able to buy a box of urine glucose monitoring strips from a shop that also sells a gadget that's supposed to be the best way to lose belly fat. I didn't want to go on a weekend but we were already near the area so we still pushed through with our plans. At least I was able to buy something. Most of the shops sell clothes and shoes and there are just a handful of shops that sell other gift items. There are, however, a lot of food concessionaires which made my boy really happy and full!

I might go to Greenhills this coming week to see what I can buy. The space below our Christmas tree is still empty and it's already three weeks before Christmas! Good luck to me!

Laptop Safety

Kensington lock
Photo: “Kensington lock” by Bill Sodeman, c/o Flickr. Some Rights Reserved

I finally have a Kensington lock for my laptop. I've been wanting to buy one ever since I started bringing my laptop so I can work in a coffee shop or restaurant in between errands. Sorry, Salisi Gang, you can't have my laptop!

Kensington locks are so expensive. The cheapest one I found was at Php 2,500. As expensive as it seemed, I still made the purchase because I need to keep my laptop safe from thieves. It's my partner in blogging and in my freelance writing gigs. I am also thinking of getting a laptop insurance soon. These are just one of the many operational costs of being a freelancer.
